In Journalism we will learn the old-school (paper) and new-school (digital) styles of journalism. We'll start with the basics of journalism ethics and how to write the hard news story. From there, we expand into Sports and Features writing, photography, graphic design and layouts. The semester will culminate with each student creating their own original newspaper. This class acts as a prerequisite and a training ground for students looking to join The Spectator or The Lahian.
Mr. Cervelloni has a minor in Journalism, his Masters of Fine Arts in Writing, and has been published in several literary magazines. His standards and expectations are high. This class is writing-intensive and students will be required to create a great deal of original work.
Unlike most classes, where the teacher provides the material and the students learn as to meet teacher expectations, Journalism requires the students to first decide what they want to learn, gather the material outside of class, and then return to class to use that material in the lessons. Mr. C guides and advises students toward better writing, better photography, and better graphic design. While he can brings students to high levels of quality, students fill in the content/curriculum blanks with what interests them personally.
GRADING: Because of the above, your journalism grade will be based on the following: - small in-class activities (5 points) and pop quizzes (5 points) - rough drafts for each of three major articles (each 10 points) - final drafts for each major article (each 20 points) - a 5-picture photography assignment (20 points) - a partner project in which you make your own magazine spread (50 points) - Your final is a group project to produce your own magazine.
